Good evening everyone. I read chapter 13-14 this weekend. I am in the situation where I would like to ask Briony to please stop making up stories or to stop assuming things. For example, when Briony found Lola in the grass after the rape incident , she immediately assumed that it was Robbie. Because of her previous experiences but still I think it is a bit ridiculous. What is your guy's opinion?

  1. Briony likes being in control of things and for things to go her way.So she does not see her actions as unjust but on her point of view she sees that she is protecting her sister from the monster or maniac she thinks Robbie turner is. By accusing Robbie, Briony is trying to make people believe Robbie is the monster she has assumed him to be and by giving the letter as evidence it passes on the message that Robbie is really a monster. But I think Briony should have talked to Cecelia at least before coming up with all these accusations ;)

  2. I feel that Briony’s accusation in this situation is false because Briony just saw a figure running away and just identifies it as a male,pg 165. What weakens her statement is that she asks Lola if it was Robbie that attacked her; this tells us that she doesn’t know who the person actually is.I don't think it was Robbie. What also makes me doubt her assumption is that part one is nearly at its end and this incident has to be the incident that a particular character has to atone or make amends for their wrong doings, hence the name atonement, otherwise the book’s storyline will be dragged and wouldn’t make such a good read. Robbie has a good character as it is shown when he brings back the twins. I do not think it was right for Briony to do that and make Robbie suffer for something he did not do. Robbie gets arrested because of Briony's accusation - this is what I think Briony has to atone for.

  3. I agree with Randall. the author shows us that Robbie is one of the good guys so we don't expect something like this from him. it obviously isn't Robbie he's too busy day dreaming about Cecilia. i think one of the top suspects must be Paul Marshall considering how he was flirting with Lola who is such a young girl and how Cecelia's description of him and his arrogance make him less of a good character and Danny Hardman's son who the book mentions liked Lola, which would be irrelevant, but is mentioned telling us it must be significant. We aren't told anything about his character, not much, but we do know that Robbie is a good guy and like Randall said the book is probably going to be about how Briony will atone for her crime which , i assume, is Sending innocent Robbie to jail for such a heinous crime and taking Cecelia's love away from her. one can only imagine the effect this is going to have on their relationship. lol, back to topic, i think Briony is being quite childish and starts making up stories even in reality like Janco mentioned in the rape incident. at this point we cant blame it on her young and foolish age, i think she's mature enough to have seen right from wrong even from the age of 13, but ofcourse her judgement was clouded by how amazing she thought this new, mature "story" of hers should be. i think in general our sympathy towards Briony...is wearing out. hope I haven't gone off topic too much, just babbling

  4. Ay you'll writing essays#not cool ,Briony seems 2 be a girl that wants attention and praise and 2 do the right thing but she goes about it the wrong way because she hasn't being taught how 2 deal with issues by her mother as she is learning on her own now
