Does Briony deserve the treatment she gets when visitting Cecelia?

Hi guys. So i was interested in hearing what you guys thought about Briony's atonement for her sin so far. We've looked at what she goes through as a nurse in hospital and her maturity and my question is: Does Briony deserve forgiveness at this stage. Does she deserve all the contempt and treatment she gets, particularly with her visit to Cecelia. i think she doesn't deserve all the blame she gets, now that we see a matured version of her, perhaps the fact that she was young was a good excuse for her crime. It wasn't deliberate or intentional as they think and i think at this stage of the book we can offer a bit more forgiveness. i think for Robbie and Cecelia's sake, they need to forgive. you cant exactly base a relationship on shared hate... I think claiming that you'll never forgive someone is a bit harsh, yes, they will suffer the effects forever. But is it ALL really Briony's fault? Can we not blame the war even though she partially caused it?

  1. I do think it is Briony's fault because Robbie would not have been involved with the war if it wasn't for Briony's accusation.

  2. My opinion is that Briony was young and she didn't mean it. But her accusation on Robbie did shatter Cecilia's world and Robbie's world in pieces.I agree with you Mbali....they need to forgive otherwise that bitterness will never fade. Briony accepts her sin and also takes blame for it but she also realizes that she has grown up and is more responsible now than what she was then.

  3. Well I think Robbie's reaction towards briony is justified, Robbies plans and life was put on hold actually it was turned upside down by a stupid little girl, who had a crush on him. Robbie wouldn't have suffered so much if it wasn't for her think about it, just put yourself in Robbie's shoes, he will never have a normal life again..... People will think twice before hiring him just because he has a criminal record of a crime, we all know he ddn't commit . Forgiveness is a hard thing if he can't forget, every time he thinks about the war it's obvious that briony will just pop up in his thoughts .

  4. I dont think the crush counts because that wasnt her motive and att the book says she confessed and forgot about it. And a part of Robbie not living a normal life is that he doesnt want to forgive but wallows in his bitterness. is that Brionys fault too?

  5. Yes because briony never explained anything to him, think about it if someone does something to you without explanation , you remain with the Question WHY... If some1 ruined your life mbali you would forgive just like dat?

  6. yes I must say forgiveness is not an easy step to take, and Briony should be the first to forgive herself and it seems she wont forgive herself before she is forgiven and they wont forgive her before she makes right...the book points out Briony's age as an obvious reason for her childish accusation.

  7. forgive and forget, if Robbie forgives Briony, he can forget what happened but he cannot forget what he felt. The Tallis family were close with Robbie, even closer to Cecilia. What I think makes it difficult for them to forgive Briony is that when the people you love the most hurt you the most, it feels like the ultimate betrayal.

  9. Yes,she grew up and that's the real world,it was their way of healing, she knew it was coming,Robbie had 2 take his anger out on her as she is the reason 4 everything they will be 4giving her,but they needed 2 take it out on someone
